Viewers Beg for Cancellation of MTV Video Music Awards After Chaos, Incompetence, and Gross Madonna Ruin Already Vile Awards Show

I know a great many of you are too young to remember this, but there was a time where MTV not only played music, they gave awards for it.

Heck, not only did they have the Video Music Awards, they also had movie awards, too — and people cared about this stuff! Sure, it wasn’t on the same level as the Grammys or Oscars, but these shows were seen as their quirky, edgy, less-famous relative. Like the Chris Penn to Sean Penn, or the USFL to the NFL.

I’m not sure why we ever thought it was so rad, to use the parlance of those times, but maybe it was just by comparison. Because I was surprised to discover on Sunday that 1) MTV still exists, 2) the VMAs still exist, and 3) goodness, they seem awful even by the standards of the 1990s.

The evening was best summed up by Madonna when she accepted the award for “Best Dance” — which, considering the 68-year-old Madonna was mostly washed up by the time I was old enough to start caring about music that wasn’t “Weird” Al Yankovic, is proof that the VMAs should be taken out of their misery like Ol’ Yeller.

Oh, and I almost forgot about the host: Snoop Dogg, an admitted sex trafficker and one-time accused murderer who is now so family friendly he literally voiced a cat in “The Garfield Movie.” I’m assuming that cat didn’t have any lines about smoking a fat blunt or prostituting women, but even though my kids wanted to see that filmic conflagration, I managed to — unlike at least one guy who’s crossed Snoop’s path — dodge that bullet, so I couldn’t tell you for sure.

I remember the launch of MTV back in 1981, and boy was it a game changer! Back then what was coined as Hair Metal was just beginning, and it actually got airtime on all the big radio stations, but I remember my parents hated it with a passion. Even more so with music videos playing 24/7 on TV. Hair Metal was actually on some of the Pop music TV stations. I can remember Ozzy Osbourne singing ‘Bark at the Moon’ on American Bandstand on TV. I had to beg to watch it, and my parents did allow me, just once. The 80’s seem like a magical time thinking back. Now, fast forward to today, MTV is a shell of what it used to be. Mostly black artists rapping about robbing, raping and killing people, oh yeah, selling drugs too. It no longer plays music 24/7, and it added some reality TV shows that are morally sickening. I’ve never watched it after the 80’s because of the rap music and filthy shows. Shows about young teens getting pregnant, and glorifying it. Single teenage Moms, with no Father to help, and it glorifies it! I’m sure young female teens watched and thought it was cool, until they got pregnant and reality set in. I know throughout history music evolves. Everyone has their fair share of the music they grew up on, but I can’t think of any other time that robbing, raping, killing and drug selling was the the norm. Only in rap is it glorified. And also the promotion of miscegenation, but that’s a whole story too long to get into right now.
