Consumers hit by one-two punch of oil and rates from Iran war. The estimated bill is $1,700 per household<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Consumers are facing a double-whammy of jumping oil prices and Treasury yields amid the U.S. war with Iran that is leaving them increasingly cash-strapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Crude prices reaccelerated in recent weeks as fighting between the U.S. and Iran has ramped back up, a development that will lead to higher prices at the pump. On top of that, the 10-year Treasury yield jumped this week to its highest in 19 years, threatening to intensify affordability challenges for consumers as borrowing costs rise for items like homes and cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Consumers are under a lot of financial pressure,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The total bill per household since the U.S.-Iran conflict began is around $1,760, according to an analysis from Moody’s Analytics as of Sept. 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zandi said $930 \u2014 or more than half \u2014 of that total bill for households comes from higher costs for energy, a category that includes pressures from rising prices on items like gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. Cumulatively, Moody’s found that U.S. consumers have spent more than $121 billion extra on energy since the war began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another $425 of that $1,760 stems from higher interest rates since the war broke out. The final $405 comes from higher military spending, which Zandi said consumers will foot the bill for through either national debt expansion or increased taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wow! $1,700 per household. That may not sound like much since this war started, but I can think of plenty of things my household could’ve and still could do with that money. I’m sure yours could too. Think of how many groceries we could’ve bought! Electric went up too, so if you’re like me, I sure could’ve used the air conditioner more this past summer, maybe went further or seen more over vacation this summer too, but had to watch the fuel bill. Speaking of fuel, it costs a lot more now to go to work to have more taken out in taxes. We have hungry illegals to feed you know. Now that I have you thinking what you could’ve done with that extra $1,700, here’s something else to think about. Remember when this war started, it was us and Israel against Iran. Somehow, it’s mostly just us against Iran now. It reminds me of school days when weaker kids picked fights with the playground bullies, and when the bullies fought back, the weaker kid asked his friends to jump in to win the fight, and suddenly the weaker kid wasn’t in the fight anymore, but standing on the sidelines watching others fight the fight he started.
